The attribution of the series rests primarily on m The attribution of the series rests primarily on matters of style. The physiognomies, the elongated facial ovals, the almond-shaped eyes, and the treatment of the drapery all find close parallels in works of Carlo Francesco Mellone, one of the leading sculptors active in Lombardy during the first decades of the eighteenth century.Born in Milan in 1670, Mellone trained under Carlo Simonetta before completing his artistic education in Rome. Upon returning to his native city, he became a central figure in the renewal of Lombard sculpture, combining lessons absorbed from the Roman Baroque with a lighter and more refined sensibility that would come to define the Milanese barocchetto. The Summer belongs fully to this artistic climate and stands among its most persuasive expressions.Carlo Francesco Mellone (?), Allegory of Summer, from the series of the Four Seasons, c. 1720–1735, terracotta, h. 84 cm.#CarloFrancescoMellone #ItalianBaroque #MilaneseArt #OldMasters #WalterPadovani

The result is a figure animated by movement, yet never by agitation.Carlo Francesco Mellone (?), Allegory of Summer, from the series of the Four Seasons, c. 1720–1735, terracotta, h. 84 cm.#Barocchetto #ItalianSculpture #Terracotta #LombardArt #ArtHistory
